Beginner - Lesson 14

I've been practicing chords for a bit. I did run into a small problem for me. On the scale, there are 'x' in placement of a quarter note. I understand that it's not an open string because it would be a 0 on the Tabs. So how would I produce that sound that Papa Gates is doing?

The 'x' normaly indicates a left hand muted note, to do it you simply rest a finger against the indicated string, when you play it it should create a percussive sound. Check out bars 7-8 in lesson 14, Papa Gates explains it there.

The 'x' is notation for a so called dead note. You do them by putting your fingers on a fret but not pressing down.
